Grade 5 & 6 - Torrey Smith

Welcome!

This year, our fifth and sixth grade class will have fun diving into the past -- from the creation of the earth to our earliest civilizations. We will work to dig deeper into science and social studies by overlapping their study with our other literacy and math work. We’ll do lots of reading, lots of writing, lots of discussing, and lots of exploration – online, in books, and getting our hands on materials that help us learn about the world around us. We’ll find multiple ways to demonstrate learning – writing more traditional reports as well as making models, movies, posters, games or other presentations that provide students with a chance to show off their understanding. We’ll often play games and solve puzzles – these offer different ways to work together, practice logical and strategic thinking, and have fun. We aim to foster a classroom community that is welcoming and inclusive so that students can grow both academically and socially.

Homework is designed to practice self-direction and organization, as well as provide additional time for reading.

Students typically have three assignments a week -- two in reading and one in math. Homework is assigned at the start of the week and due at the end.
