Ski and Board Program
The Waitsfield Elementary School Winter Sports Program runs for ten Wednesdays throughout the winter months and has many goals: building life-long wellness skills, fostering an enjoyment for healthy winter activities, building relationships between students in our whole school community and between children and a variety of community members. While the program is the result of the work of many, this program is considered a part of the WES school day. Katie Westhelle, who coordinates the program, and Kaiya are responsible for making the day-to-day decisions regarding the organization of the program. All students in 1st through 6th grade participate in the program.
The Winter Program is a collaborative effort, run by the school with the financial support of the PTA. Our collaboration includes parent volunteers, community volunteers, Sugarbush, Mad River, the PTA, school staff, and others. This is a great opportunity for members of our community to share their passion for the outdoors with all of our students. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Katie or 496-3643. There is a mandatory training for all volunteers.
All students have an option to downhill ski or snowboard. We are committed to creating a positive experience for all children and are best able to do this, and manage costs, by offering just these two choices. Thank you for helping your child select an activity and also indicating a skills level on the 2018-2019 student sign up sheet.
Participants in skiing and snowboarding are expected to have their own equipment, including a helmet. New and used equipment can be purchased at the Waitsfield Ski and Skate Sale. The purchase of equipment at the sale helps fund the winter program. Rentals are also a cost effective way to outfit a child. Rentals are available from several local shops.
Scholarships for equipment are available. We are committed to all students having access to this program. If scholarship is needed, please complete the scholarship section on the student sign up form and return it to school with your other paperwork.
